FEBRUARY 2010
HAPPY HEARTS DAY
2010 is off to a splendid start! This month, HSM instructors will begin working on routines with their classes for HSM's spring showcase. This is a prime opportunity to establish new or regular practice schedules and set goals for the next 3 months! Students, talk to your instructor for ideas and tips on learning and refining choreography at home!
In celebration of Valentine's Day this month, our Bop Kidz and Soul Graffiti classes are encouraged to come to class on February 10 decked out in all their pink and red hip hop gear! 'Tis the season to wear pink and red!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS
HSM'S spring showcase, "Dance 4 Compassion", has been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 11th, 2010, at the Westbury Theatre. So flip your calendars ahead to May and pencil in this important date!
HSM APPAREL
New HSM Apparel can still be purchased. Please ask your instructors for details on how to get one of our new BURNOUT T’s, on sale for $25, and our new SWEAT PANTS, on sale for $30.
STEPPIN' OUT
"Steppin' Out", a benefit concert for the Kids Kottage Foundation, is happening this Friday, February 5th, at 7pm (doors open at 6:30). Our Bop Kids, Soul Graffiti, and Mad Rhythm students will be participating in this worthwhile event by performing alongside other local artists including JDML, Allegiance, and other special guests. We invite you to come out and support our HSM dancers this Friday night at Ellerslie Road Baptist Church (10636 Ellerslie Rd). For more information, please contact Jennifer Kentel at allegiance@shaw.ca or call Pam Miller, from the Kids Cottage Foundation, at (780) 448-2545.
STREET GROOVE DANCE CONVENTION
HSM instructors highly encourage all of our students to attend Street Groove, a hip hop convention happening at the Shaw Conference Centre on February 6th and 7th. This is an incredible opportunity to be challenged and inspired as dancers by taking in two full days of classes from world-class faculty in styles such as popping, locking, street, breaking, house, and more. HSM instructors attend this convention every year and are strong supporters of Groove Street Productions, a dance company from Vancouver that puts on this convention. Faculty for Street Groove Edmonton 2010, so far, include Stephen "tWitch" Boss, Luther Brown, SYTYCD's Nico, Gus Bembery, and Alex Pesuich. A schedule of the weekend along with registration forms can be found online at www.groovestreet.net.
HSM NEW ZEALAND
HSM instructor Mel, and her husband Brendon, have safely arrived in New Zealand, and are greatly enjoying their first days living in Auckland. We hope to hear future updates from Mel on a regular basis. Here is the first of hopefully many to come:
Hello HSM Family! Greetings from Kiwiland! Brendon and I are absolutely loving it here, especially with the abundance of beaches, scooters, and coffee shops. There is a dance studio in downtown Auckland that I hope to check out soon called "City Dance," which offers tons of drop-in classes daily. I'm looking forward to taking classes from different instructors and finding out more about the dance scene here in Auckland. I'll keep you posted!
